Box Factory Women
Digitally restored photo printed on metal, 23" wide x 12" high, ready to hang.
The gunpowder plant box factory was the first division within the manufacturing process to employee women. Women were initially hired, for the most part, to fulfill secretarial, clerical, nursing, food service, and cleaning duties. That changed as the need for men to be called to service arose. Women worked in 8-hour shifts and were required to wear uniforms called “womanalls” along with a khaki cap. The boxes they constructed each had a capacity of 150 pounds of powder, were zinc lined, and airtight.
