Swinging Bridge Under Construction

Digitally restored photo printed on metal, 50" wide x 11" high, ready to hang.

Before the Old Hickory dam was installed in the 1950's, the Cumberland River was more dangerous and out of control than it is today. Old Hickory was chosen for the Gun Powder plant because there was only one way in and one way out via road. There was no access to the area across the river. The first means of accessing the Gun Powder plant from the Madison side was a ferry which was often at overflow capacity. It wasn’t long before that the government realized they needed to remedy the situation while the swinging bridge was being installed. Built in just six days, a pontoon bridge, made up of 24 pontoons, was anchored in place by June 26, 1918. The bridge can carry a dead load of ten tons and opened in the middle to allow river traffic to pass. The pontoon bridge wasn’t what you would call reliable and the pontoons were often swept away by high waters.
