The courthouse for Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County, completed in 1937, is located in the old public square area of downtown Nashville at the corner of Union Street and Third Avenue.

This structure, rectangular in shape, features Greek Doric detailing and classic ornamentation. It houses many Metro courtrooms, agencies and departments; plus office space for the Mayor and City Council and a meeting chamber for the council. In 1962, Davidson County residents voted to inaugurate a Metropolitan form of government, with the courthouse as its headquarters. As shown in this 1999 lithograph, fountains are located on either side of the patio area in front of the building.
